Roofers in Byron BayTimber and iron, close to the surf.
In Byron Bay, what goes on your roof can matter to the council as much as to the weather. Byron Shire Council describes the area's built character as timber and iron, and on heritage homes it prefers uncoloured metal roofs, naming galvanised steel as the closest match. Add salt from surf beaches like The Pass and Wategos, and gusts of over 100 km/h from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in 2025. Tell us about the job and we'll match you with a Byron Bay roofer who specialises in that work, if we have one.

What's different about Byron roofs?
The heritage rules are specific. On heritage items and in Heritage Conservation Areas, the council recommends keeping or reinstating uncoloured traditional metal roofs, unless the building originally had tiles. For re-roofing heritage buildings it names Galvanised Steel Z600 as the closest matching product.
Colorbond has a place, just not everywhere. The council says Colorbond, introduced in 1966, isn't preferred for heritage items, though pale to mid greys can suit new infill. Zincalume, introduced in 1976, suits infill and non-listed buildings in Conservation Areas.
The temperatures are mild but the rain isn't. Cape Byron's record high is only 35.9 °C, yet it averages 1,509.2 mm of rain over 158.2 precipitation days a year, with April the wettest month at 183.5 mm.
Byron Bay roofs, by what they face
Don't mix the metals
Byron Shire Council warns that Zincalume can't be mixed with galvanised steel because of electrochemical corrosion. Gutters have to match the roof: a galvanised roof can take galvanised or Colorbond gutters, while a Colorbond or zinc roof needs Colorbond or zinc gutters.
A trade-off worth knowing
BlueScope's own view is that COLORBOND and ZINCALUME outperform galvanised steel in most roofing. On a heritage home, the council's preferred look and the manufacturer's performance advice can pull in different directions, so talk to both before anything is ordered.
Salt on the surf side
The Pass, Wategos and Cosy Corner are surf beaches. For homes 100 to 200 m from breaking surf, Lysaght recommends COLORBOND Ultra, and SUPERDURA stainless inside 100 m, measured from the high tide mark. Ultra comes in 7 colours, including Shale Grey, Windspray and Woodland Grey.
Storms and floods
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred brought gusts over 100 km/h on 7 March 2025. On 30 March 2022, Jonson Street was partly under water, and in February 2022 the Brunswick River at Mullumbimby peaked at 4.98 m, 0.30 m above the 1987 record.
Fire at Suffolk Park
Suffolk Park, just south of town, had heath fire edging toward it in January 2014. Lightning started it, and peat burning underground kept it going for weeks.
Jobs that come up most in Byron Bay
Metal re-roofs, where the right steel depends on both the council's heritage guidance and your distance from the surf. See Colorbond roofing and Zincalume.
Small heritage repairs. The council says matching repairs, like a new sheet or a length of gutter in the same profile, can be done on heritage properties without prior consent. Re-roofing a heritage property does need consent, and the approval has to be in writing before work starts.
Gutters in the right shape. Buildings up to the late 1800s and early 1900s generally had half round or ogee gutters, which the council says should be non-perforated. Gutter profiles explains the shapes.
Storm repairs after a big blow. Emergency roof repairs covers what to do first.
Our view on Byron roofs
If your home is heritage listed or in a Conservation Area, we'd call Byron Shire Council before getting quotes, and get any approval in writing before work starts. Near the surf, we'd choose the steel by distance first and colour second. And we'd make sure whoever quotes knows not to mix Zincalume with galvanised, on the roof or in the gutters.
