Roofing help in CairnsThe wettest roof you'll ever own.
Cairns gets just under 2,000 mm of rain a year, so a Cairns roof spends months getting soaked, then has to hold on through cyclone season. Most roof work here is about water and fixings: keeping screws, sheets and flashings sound before the wet, and checking older homes were built to a wind rating at all. We pass jobs to licence-checked local roofers where we have them, and say so straight away when we don't.

What makes Cairns roofs different
Rain on nearly one day in three
The Cairns station averages 1,958.1 mm a year on 118.3 rain days (Bureau of Meteorology 1991 to 2020 normals, via Wikipedia). February alone averages 475.5 mm, and Wikipedia notes wet-season months can top 1,000 mm. Even June to September still average 4.2 to 7.2 rain days a month, so there's no truly bone-dry window for roof work.
A cyclone city on paper and in memory
Wikipedia's list of cyclones affecting Cairns includes Justin, Rona, Steve, Abigail, Larry, Yasi and Jasper, usually forming between November and May. The QRA puts the coast north of Bundaberg, Cairns included, in Wind Region C, where homes are designed for gusts of 250 km/h.
Newer homes held, older ones didn't
A damage survey after Cyclone Larry in 2006 found most contemporary houses stayed structurally intact, while buildings from before the higher cyclone standards suffered more. The QRA says homes built before the 1990s may have no wind classification at all.
Jasper's water came from the ground up
Cyclone Jasper in December 2023 caused record flooding: the Barron River beat its 1977 record and the airport closed. In coastal suburbs, people trapped on their roofs were rescued by personal watercraft.
Salt along the Northern Beaches
From Machans Beach and Holloways Beach to Trinity Beach, Palm Cove and Ellis Beach, many homes sit close to the sea. The QRA says salt spray speeds up corrosion of steel straps, connections and roofing, and recommends more corrosion-resistant fasteners near saltwater. BlueScope's TB-35 names the Cairns Strand areas as exposed, a class that shares the surf distance rules. It doesn't list the Northern Beaches by name, so have the roofer confirm yours.
Screws are the weak link
The QRA shows a roof lost because its roofing screws had corroded, and says routine maintenance should include replacing corroded fasteners. In a climate this wet and humid, that's the job most roofs need most.
The roof jobs Cairns homeowners call about
Leaks and rusted fixings. With rain most of the year, small gaps get found fast. Replacing corroded screws and tired flashings tops the list. See roof repairs in Cairns.
Re-roofing pre-1990s homes. The QRA recommends a building professional check connections and timbers on homes built before the mid-1980s. That's usually done when the old roof comes off. Our Cairns roof replacement page explains.
Gutters and downpipes. A wet-season month of 1,000 mm tests capacity, not just cleanliness. Start with roof plumbing, gutter replacement or gutter cleaning.
Mould and grime. Humid air and shade let growth take hold on roofs, which is where roof cleaning in Cairns comes in.
Queenslanders. The classic high-set timber house with an iron roof and verandas is part of Cairns, and heritage examples like Cominos House in Manunda show how they were built. Their steel roofs could be reused after cyclone damage, but the framing under them is often original.
In the wet and after a cyclone
Never go up on a roof once a cyclone is forecast or while it's raining. If floodwater is rising, the SES (132 500) and emergency services come first. ASSEA warns storms and floods can damage asbestos materials, so don't pressure-wash old fibro to clean up. And be wary of anyone who knocks offering quick repairs: check their QBCC licence and talk to your insurer first.
If we owned a Cairns home
We'd book a roof check every dry season, from June to October, and ask the roofer to look at the screws as closely as the sheets. If the house is pre-1990s, we'd want to know what wind rating it was built for, if any, before spending money on anything cosmetic.

How we fit in
We're a referral service, not roofers. Tell us your suburb, from Edmonton in the south to Palm Cove in the north, and what's going on, and we'll look for one licence-checked roofer who works there. If there's nobody suitable, we'll let you know quickly.
