Colorbond colours

WindsprayA grey roof that can live by the sea.

Windspray is a soft, neutral mid-grey, and it's the only grey in the range that BlueScope makes in both of its coastal grades, Ultra and Superdura Stainless. If you want a grey roof near the beach that's neither pale nor near-black, it's the first sheet to ask for.

On-screen colour is approximate. Always look at a real sample sheet outside.

How does Windspray look?

BlueScope calls it restrained and mid-strength, a nod to sea mist and summer breezes. Because it's so neutral it sits in warm or cool schemes, and BlueScope suggests it with concrete and grey weathered timber.

Its palettes pair Windspray with Surfmist Matt, use a Windspray accent to calm a Cottage Green roof, or combine it with oak and small touches of Bluegum. A mid-grey like this also tends to hide dust, leaf litter and salt film better than white or black.

Which grade does your house need?

  1. Measure from the high-water mark

BlueScope's distances start at the high tide mark, not your front fence. A rough measure on a map is enough to start the conversation.

  2. Work out what kind of water it is

Breaking surf and exposed water such as Botany Bay are the harsh ones. Calm water like Darling Harbour or the Parramatta River is gentler, and standard Colorbond suits any distance from it.

  3. Match the steel to the distance

BlueScope recommends standard Colorbond beyond 200 m of breaking surf, Ultra from 100 to 200 m, and Superdura Stainless within about 100 m. Windspray comes in all three.

  4. Don't forget the gutters

BlueScope's rule for gutters, downpipes and fascia is separate: standard Colorbond beyond 200 m of salt water, Ultra beyond 100 m. Ask for them in the same grade as the roof.

How warm does it run?

Windspray's solar absorptance is 0.60, which puts it in the medium band on BlueScope's thresholds. That's a shade under the 0.64 cut-off that lets a new home in zones 1 to 5 skip the full NatHERS rating for its roof. It will still run warmer than a pale roof in summer, so make sure the roof insulation is up to scratch.

Near the beach, salt builds up wherever rain can't reach, and BlueScope's maintenance bulletin says to wash those spots every three months. Judge samples from where the roof is seen, usually the street.

If we lived near the beach

We'd pick Windspray in whatever grade the distance calls for, and ask for gutters, fascia and flashings in the same grade. It's neutral enough for most coastal homes and forgiving of salt and dust. Colorbond is a trademark of BlueScope, and Find My Roofer works independently of it.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is Windspray warm or cool?
Neutral. BlueScope says it works in warm or cool schemes, which is why it pairs with so many claddings and timbers.
Can I get a Windspray water tank?
BlueScope lists Windspray for water tanks as well as roofing, walls and gutters, so a tank can match the roof.
