Roofers in DubboSun most days, until the storm arrives.
Dubbo is dry and sunny most of the year, so roofs here tend to fail in one storm rather than slowly. At 5 pm on 9 February 2023, golf ball sized hail and about 10,000 lightning strikes hit the city. Hail-clogged drains sent water into roof linings, and some roofs collapsed. Tell us what's going on and we'll match you with a licence-checked Dubbo roofer who specialises in that sort of job if we have one, or say so if we don't.

What's different about a Dubbo roof?
The climate is hard on surfaces. Dubbo Regional Airport averages 594.3 mm of rain a year over 58.6 rain days, afternoon humidity averages just 41%, and the city gets 148.6 clear days a year against Sydney's 104. Months of strong sun are what wear down roof coatings and sealants.
The wind has favourite directions. Winds from the south-east round to the west blow 64.4% of the year, and storms bring sudden gusts on top of that. Winters bring some early morning frosts.
The older housing is mostly brick. Dubbo has plenty of early 20th century red brick California Bungalows, Victorian terraces mostly around Darling Street, and a few Edwardian semi-detached homes.
What Dubbo storms have done to roofs
Hail and lightning, February 2023
Skylights were broken, Orana Mall was evacuated because of flooding and about 14,000 homes lost power. Dubbo SES took over 240 calls that evening and about two dozen more the next morning.
Wind, December 2020
On a Saturday night in early December 2020, gusts reached 106 km/h at 7.40 pm and held for six minutes. One house had half its roof blown off, and the SES attended 18 jobs in Dubbo.
The Macquarie River
The Macquarie runs through Dubbo and was in flood there in August 2010. Home insurance treats flood under its own definition and may exclude it, so it's worth knowing where your policy stands.
Bush fire prone land
Dubbo Regional Council prepares the bush fire prone land map, which the NSW RFS Commissioner certifies. If your block is mapped, the RFS asks for roofing that's non-combustible and sealed, and gutters cleared of litter before the fire season.
The roof jobs that come up most in Dubbo
Hail and storm repairs, skylights included. Hail and storm damage and skylight replacement cover both.
Fixings checked after wind. A roof that lost a few screws or a ridge cap in one storm is more likely to lift in the next. Metal roof repairs explains what's involved.
Gutters and drains that can take storm runoff. Hail-clogged drains were how water got into roof linings in 2023, so clear outlets matter as much as the roof itself.
Restoration or painting on sun-worn roofs. On a red brick bungalow with sound tiles, rebedding the ridges and recoating is usually cheaper than a new roof. See roof restoration.
If it were our Dubbo roof
We'd get the gutters, drains and skylights checked before the summer storms, and ask the roofer to look at sheet fixings and ridge caps while they're there. After a hailstorm we'd make it safe, photograph everything and call the insurer before choosing who does the permanent fix. On an older brick bungalow, we'd restore a sound tiled roof rather than replace it.
