Roofers in GympieA wet town that knows its floods.
Gympie averages 1,117.4 mm of rain a year, most of it from January to March, and the Mary River has flooded the town again and again. Roofs here need to shed a lot of water quickly, through gutters that keep up. We haven't found reliable local records on wind or bushfire for Gympie, so this page sticks to what's known. Tell us the job and we'll find a licence-checked roofer near Gympie who specialises in it, or tell you straight away if we don't have one.

What's different about roofs in Gympie?
Sheer volume of water. Gympie's 1,117.4 mm falls over 79.2 rain days a year, and the wet season is concentrated: February averages 168.9 mm and January 160.1 mm, while August, the driest month, gets 39.3 mm.
Real swings in temperature. The town has recorded 42.4 °C, on 4 January 2014, and minus 4.3 °C, on 20 July 2007. Roofs and coatings here have to put up with hard summer heat and the occasional frosty night.
River floods are Gympie's big story, but they're a different problem from roof leaks. If water came into the house, have the electrics checked before power goes back on, and get the ceilings and roof space looked at before anyone starts patching.
Gympie and around: what homes have been through
February 2022
The Mary River peaked at 22.96 metres on 27 February 2022, more than a metre above the 1999 flood. Up to 3,600 homes in the city were inundated and about 550 people sheltered at the evacuation centre. It was Gympie's worst flood since 1893.
A long flood record
Wikipedia lists a dozen significant Mary River floods at Gympie since 1870, most of them between December and April. The 1893 flood, at 25.45 metres, is still the highest on record.
Ex-cyclone rain
In January 2022 the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Seth dropped 400 to 674 mm on hills north-west of Gympie, with emergency alerts for Goomeri, Kilkivan and Woolooga. Rain like that tests every gutter and downpipe, flood or no flood.
Gold-rush streets and heritage
Gympie grew from James Nash's gold find in 1867, which is why its streets run in an irregular pattern. Mary Street keeps nineteenth-century Victorian buildings, and local heritage places are mapped in council's Heritage and Neighbourhood Character Overlay, which adds requirements for building work.
New flood rules since 2024
Since 1 January 2024, Gympie Regional Council requires new homes in flood hazard areas to have floors 300 mm above its defined flood level, based on a future-climate model. Homes built before then weren't held to that rule.
The Cooloola Coast
At Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach, council sets floor levels from storm tide data rather than river levels. On the coast, salt air comes into the choice of roofing steel, so ask a roofer which grade suits your distance from the water.
The jobs that come up most around Gympie
Gutters and downpipes. With this much summer rain, blocked or undersized gutters are a common way for water to get into eaves and walls. Clear them before December: gutter cleaning in Gympie explains the timing.
Leak repairs. Heavy, frequent rain finds cracked tiles, tired flashings and old ridge pointing quickly. Our roof leaking in heavy rain guide helps you narrow down the cause, and roof repairs covers the fix.
Work on older homes. On a heritage place or a house inside the overlay, roof work may have to meet council's requirements, so check before choosing materials or colours.
What we'd do in Gympie
We'd keep gutters and downpipes clear going into December and check them after every big rain. If the house has flooded, we'd get the electrics and structure checked before spending anything on the roof. And for an older house in the heritage overlay, we'd ask Gympie Regional Council what applies before getting quotes.
