Roofing help in RockhamptonDrier than the north, but still cyclone country.
Rockhampton gets far less rain than Mackay or Cairns, but it sits in the cyclone risk zone, and Cyclone Marcia took roofs off homes here in 2015. Roof work in Rockhampton is about tie-downs that hold, roofs that cope with summer storms and heat, and older homes that need checking before they're re-roofed. We pass jobs to licence-checked local roofers where we have them, and tell you straight away when we don't.

What shapes roofs in Rockhampton
Marcia, as the houses felt it
Cyclone Marcia was reported as a Category 3 when it crossed Rockhampton on 20 February 2015. The QRA rates the winds the city actually felt as Category 1 and 2, against Category 2 and 3 at Yeppoon and Category 4 at Shoalwater Bay. Even so, nearly 700 properties were damaged in the Rockhampton region and roofs were ripped off homes.
Cyclone country, wind rating unconfirmed
Wikipedia places Rockhampton inside the cyclone risk zone, about 40 to 45 km from where the Fitzroy meets the Coral Sea. The QRA says Queensland's cyclones are strongest north of Bundaberg within 50 km of the coast. Our sources don't confirm which wind region applies to Rockhampton, so ask a builder or certifier what your house was designed for.
Less rain, sharper storms
Rockhampton averages 716.9 mm a year on 56.6 rain days (Bureau of Meteorology 1991 to 2020, via Wikipedia), with February the wettest month at 135.0 mm. Summer brings thunderstorms, and the city's record 24-hour fall, 348.0 mm, came in the January 2013 floods.
Heat that tests coatings
The city sits just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. January's mean maximum is 32.6°C, and the record is 45.3°C. Afternoon humidity averages only 45%, so roofs here deal more with sun than with the constant damp further north.
Bushfire on the fringe
In the 2018 Central Queensland bushfires, all 8,000 residents of Gracemere were evacuated to the Rockhampton Showgrounds, and fire danger was raised to catastrophic for the first time. Rockhampton Regional Council says a bushfire is likely somewhere in the region every year.
Old Rockhampton
Mount Morgan gold paid for much of the city's Victorian architecture, and Quay Street is described as one of Australia's most significant 19th-century streetscapes. On The Range, along the Athelstane Range ridge, heritage-listed houses include Clancholla and Kenmore House. Allenstown filled with cottages after the Canoona gold rush.
The jobs Rockhampton roofers see most
Storm repairs. Lifted sheets, leaks after a summer storm and damage left from cyclones. See roof repairs in Rockhampton.
Restoring older roofs. The city has plenty of older homes, and tile and metal roofs that are tired but sound can often be restored instead of replaced. Our Rockhampton roof restoration page explains when that's worth it.
Re-roofing with a structural check. The QRA says homes built before 1985 usually take more damage in cyclones, and that putting a new roof over an inadequate structure is futile. A builder should check batten-to-rafter and rafter-to-wall tie-downs before new cladding goes on.
Heritage approvals. For places on the Queensland Heritage Register, most changes need approval, sometimes even repairs. For local heritage places, talk to Rockhampton Regional Council first.
Floods aren't a roofing job, but they matter
The Fitzroy River reached 10.11 m at Rockhampton in January 1918, 9.2 m in the 2010 to 2011 floods and 8.61 m in 2013. Depot Hill floods badly because it's so close to the river. A roof can't stop rising water, and Moneysmart notes flood can be excluded from a home policy even when storm is covered. Read your policy for both.
Storms, cyclones and door-knockers
Never go up on a roof once a cyclone or storm is forecast, or while it's wet. For storm damage emergencies call the SES on 132 500. After Marcia-style events, the Insurance Council warns of disaster chasers who knock on doors offering quick repairs; insurers don't send a tradesperson without telling you first.
What we'd do in Rockhampton
If your house is pre-1985, we'd ask a builder or engineer what wind rating it was built to before spending money on the roof, and have tie-downs checked whenever sheets come off. Then we'd spend on whatever keeps the roof on first and looks second.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
How it works with us
We're a referral service. Tell us your suburb, whether that's Allenstown, The Range or Gracemere, and what's happening, and we'll look for one licence-checked roofer who works there. If there's nobody suitable near you, we'll say so. Yeppoon and Emu Park sit in Livingstone Shire, not Rockhampton Region, so mention which council you're in.
