Roofers in TareeWhere a wet week can set a record.

In May 2025 the Manning River at Taree peaked at 6.5 metres, beating the 1929 record by half a metre, after 427 mm of rain fell over two days. Three years earlier, Taree logged 305 mm in 24 hours, its wettest day on record since 1881. Roofs here have to shed rain that heavy, and homes out toward Old Bar and Tinonee also face fire. Tell us what's wrong and we'll find a local roofer who specialises in exactly that if we have one, or tell you straight away if we don't.

What's different about Taree roofs?

Rain that arrives all at once. Taree Airport averages 1,149.7 mm a year over 100.6 rain days, with March the wettest month at 198.7 mm. The averages hide the bursts: 305 mm on 7 July 2022, and 427 mm across two days in May 2025, the town's wettest May on record.

The river sets the risk for many homes. Upstream at Wingham, the Manning rose about 13 metres in two days in May 2025, from 0.90 m to a peak of 14.65 m. Insurers treat storm damage and flood damage differently, so it helps to know which one reached you.

Out toward the coast, fire and salt come into it. Old Bar and Wallabi Point sit about 18 km east of Taree, close to the surf and close to the bush that burned in 2019.

Taree's record, flood by flood and fire by fire

May 2025

The Manning at Taree went past the 500-year Annual Recurrence Interval. In Glenthorne, across the river from the CBD, some homes built to council-mandated heights still flooded.

March 2021

The river reached 5.65 metres, just short of the 1929 record of 6.0 metres. Evacuations were ordered for Wingham, Cundletown and Dumaresq Island, and debris including shipping containers hit the Martin Bridge.

The Hillville fire, 2019

It started south of Taree on or before 7 November 2019, burnt for around seven weeks and damaged or destroyed at least 156 structures, 61 of them homes, across Hillville, Koorainghat, Tinonee, Old Bar and Rainbow Flat. It jumped the Pacific Highway toward Old Bar and Wallabi Point.

The Rumba Complex fire

Elsewhere in the MidCoast council area, the Rumba Complex fire had burnt 153,167 hectares by 19 January 2020.

Old Bar and Harrington

Close to breaking surf, Lysaght suggests stepping up from standard COLORBOND to Ultra at 100 to 200 m, and to SUPERDURA stainless within 100 m. Taree itself sits inland on the river, so it's the beach suburbs where this matters.

Jobs that come up most around Taree

Leak repairs after heavy rain. When 305 mm lands in a day, small gaps at flashings, valleys and ridges show up fast. Roof leaking in heavy rain explains how roofers track them down.

Gutters and downpipes that can carry a downpour. A gutter that overflows at the back sends water into eaves and walls. See downpipes and gutter cleaning.

Ember protection on bush-edge homes around Tinonee, Old Bar and Rainbow Flat. Ember guard sets out the options.

Storm damage claims, where it matters whether water came through the roof or up from the river. Our storm damage claims guide walks through the steps.

What we'd do on the Manning

We'd read our policy before the next wet season and find out exactly how it treats storm and flood. Then we'd have the roof, gutters and downpipes checked so storm rain has a clear path off the house. Near Old Bar or Harrington, we'd confirm the steel grade before any re-roof, and on the bush edge we'd clear the gutters every spring.

Questions

Straight answers.

Will my insurance pay for roof damage from the 2025 floods?
It depends on the policy and what caused the damage. Moneysmart says most home policies cover storm damage, including rainwater, but flood has a separate definition and may be excluded. If a claim is refused, the insurer must tell you in writing which part and why.
Someone offered to fix my roof after the flood. What should I check?
Check their licence on Verify NSW, and ring your insurer first. The Insurance Council warns that 'disaster chasers' knock on doors claiming to have found damage and are often unlicensed, and insurers won't send a tradesperson without telling you.
Do you cover Old Bar and Wingham as well as Taree?
We can't promise any area. If we have a licence-checked roofer who works where you are, from Wingham to Harrington, we'll pass your job to them. If not, we'll say so straight away.
