Bendigo, Victoria

Roofers in BendigoDry most of the year, then a storm does the damage.

Bendigo is a dry city where roofs mostly fail in one bad afternoon: a tornado in 2003, hail through roofs and skylights in 2023, flash floods in 2010, 2022 and 2024. Add a large stock of gold rush era cottages, many now heritage listed, and you get repairs that need both speed and care. Tell us about the job and we'll match you with a Bendigo roofer who specialises in that repair if we have one for your suburb, or tell you plainly that we don't.

What's different about roofs in Bendigo?

It's dry. Bendigo Airport averages 504.6 mm of rain a year on 112.1 days, and the city went through severe drought from 2006 to 2010 with some of the harshest water restrictions in Australia. Day to day, roofs here aren't fighting constant wet.

The damage comes in bursts instead. Storms, hail and flash flooding account for most of the emergencies, and the same north-western suburbs keep turning up in the record. Eaglehawk was in the path of the 2003 tornado, the Black Saturday fire in 2009 and the January 2023 hailstorm.

The housing is old and much of it is protected. The 1850s gold boom left Bendigo with a big stock of Victorian-era buildings, and a 2023 council study found 156 of 229 gold rush era houses it assessed met the criteria for local heritage protection.

Bendigo's roofs, by what they've been through

The 2003 tornado

On 18 May 2003 an F2 tornado cut a path 7 km long and 500 m wide through Eaglehawk and California Gully, destroying 8 homes and seriously damaging 44. SES volunteers answered 128 calls.

Hail in January 2023

A hailstorm tracked from the Maryborough area into Greater Bendigo. Hail came through roofs and skylights, lay ankle deep at Neangar Park Golf Course, and Eaglehawk logged 22 VICSES requests, the most in the state.

Black Saturday in Long Gully and Eaglehawk

On 7 February 2009 a fire that started west of the city burned into Long Gully and Eaglehawk, destroying around 61 houses and 125 sheds and outbuildings. South-east of Bendigo, the Redesdale fire burned 10,000 ha and destroyed twelve houses.

Gold rush cottages

The proposed heritage houses cluster around old mining sites in Golden Square, Ironbark, Long Gully, Quarry Hill, Flora Hill, Golden Gully, North Bendigo, West Bendigo and Bendigo itself. Bendigo architect William Vahland is credited with a cottage design copied across Victoria: central door, sash windows, central hallway and iron-lace verandahs.

Frost and heat

The airport averages 26.1 nights a year below freezing and has recorded 45.9 °C in January. Roofs here go from frosty mornings to scorching afternoons, which is hard on mortar and old sealants.

The jobs that come up most in Bendigo

Storm and hail repairs are the urgent ones: cracked tiles, dented or holed sheeting, smashed skylights and gutters packed with hail. Roof repairs in Bendigo covers what to do first and what to ask.

Roof plumbing comes next. Verandah roofs on the old cottages, downpipes that can't keep up in a flash flood and hail-damaged flashings are all roof plumbing work. See roof plumbing in Bendigo.

Gutter cleaning before summer is the cheap one that matters, especially in the suburbs that burned in 2009. Gutter cleaning in Bendigo has the local timing.

After a Bendigo storm, be wary of

  • Someone knocking on doors the morning after hail, offering to fix your roof today.
  • A quote that won't name a licence number or a business address
  • Pressure to sign over your insurance claim before you've spoken to your insurer
  • Anyone keen to replace iron-lace or original features on a heritage cottage without mentioning the council
  • A big cash deposit before any materials arrive

What we'd do in Bendigo

Take photos of your roof, gutters and skylights now, on a calm day, so you have a before picture if hail or wind ever hits. After a storm, get a temporary fix to keep water out, then take your time choosing who does the permanent repair. If you own a gold rush era cottage, check with the City of Greater Bendigo before changing anything you can see from the street.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who do I call after storm damage in Bendigo?
If water is coming in or the roof is structurally damaged, call the SES on 132 500. Then call your insurer. Once the emergency is handled, we can pass the repair to one licence-checked local roofer, if we have one near you.
Is my Bendigo house heritage listed?
It might be, especially if it's a gold rush era cottage near the old mining areas. The council's 2023 study proposed protection for 156 houses. Under a Heritage Overlay, roof repairs that change the look or swap in different materials need a planning permit, so ask the City of Greater Bendigo first.
Does hail damage usually show from the ground?
Not always. Cracked tiles and dents can be hard to spot. If you've had hail, a roofer's inspection with photos is worth having for your insurance claim. Our hail damage claims guide explains the steps.
Do you cover every Bendigo suburb?
We can't promise that. We only pass jobs to licence-checked roofers who work near you, and if there isn't one for your suburb, we'll tell you straight away so you can look elsewhere.
