Colorbond colours

IronstoneDark grey with a hint of storm blue.

Ironstone is a deep blue-grey, like a storm sky over a rough sea. It has more colour in it than Monument, so it suits homes where you want the roof to have some character without going bold. For heat it matches Monument exactly, so treat it as a dark roof.

On-screen colour is approximate. Always look at a real sample sheet outside.

What does Ironstone look like?

BlueScope describes a deep colour capturing the steely blues of stormy skies and wild seas. In flat, overcast light it can pass for charcoal; in sun, the blue comes through. That shift is bigger than with neutral greys, so check a sample in the morning and the afternoon.

BlueScope says it complements bluestone, terrazzo and glazed brick, and that warm neutrals give it a more traditional feel. Its palettes finish Ironstone and Gully with Surfmist, set Monument Matt beside it, or offset Manor Red with it for a cool, industrial look.

Which homes suit Ironstone?

It tends to suit period homes with bluestone foundations or dark brick, and modern homes built from concrete and timber. Against cream render or sandstone it gives a crisp contrast. Against orange brick the blue can fight the warmth, so see a sample against the wall before you decide.

How hot does it run, and can it go near the sea?

Ironstone's published figure is 0.73, the same as Monument and Cottage Green. By BlueScope's thresholds that's dark under NSW BASIX and the older national bands, and it's over the 0.64 mark, so a new home in zones 1 to 5 would need a 7 star NatHERS rating. Under a dark roof, good insulation matters in a warm climate.

It isn't one of the Ultra colours. Protected water like a harbour or river estuary doesn't limit it, since BlueScope recommends standard Colorbond at any distance from calm water. It's breaking surf and exposed water where the 200 m line applies. Ironstone is in the Colorbond fence range as well.

Where we'd lean

If bluestone, slate, dark brick or grey render is part of your house, we'd shortlist Ironstone ahead of a plain charcoal, because it ties the roof to those materials. On warm orange brick, we'd lean towards Monument or Wallaby instead. Colorbond is BlueScope's trademark; Find My Roofer has no connection to the company.
