Roofers in MilduraBuilt for sun. Tested by the odd violent storm.
Mildura roofs spend most of the year baking. The airport averages 3,133.8 hours of sunshine and just 273.6 mm of rain a year, and has recorded 48.6 °C. Then a summer storm drops more rain in a night than the roof sees in a month. Heat control and storm readiness are the two things to get right. Tell us the job and we'll find a roofer around Mildura who specialises in exactly that, or let you know if we don't have one.

What's different about roofs in Mildura?
Heat and sun, mainly. January averages a 33.3 °C maximum, temperatures pass 40 °C on a number of days every year, and the city gets 341.0 hours of sunshine in January alone. CSR Bradford says an unventilated roof space can reach 70 °C in summer, and that heat works its way down through the ceiling.
Rain is scarce, 273.6 mm on 65.9 days a year at the airport. But when it comes, it can come all at once. Mildura's record daily fall is 155 mm, on 5 February 2011, and a night of storms in January 2022 brought 80 mm, the biggest January day on record there.
The housing is spread out. Mildura's homes are almost all detached houses on relatively large blocks, and the city has grown mostly to the south, south-west and, more recently, the east.
Mildura and around: what roofs have faced
The November 2016 supercell
A supercell storm hit on the night of 11 November 2016, damaging property, farms and infrastructure. VICSES received more than 485 requests for help and up to 8,000 homes lost power.
The January 2022 storms, Mildura and Irymple
Overnight on 26 to 27 January 2022 the Mildura VICSES unit took 120 calls between 9 pm and 5 am. Building damage calls included 22 in Mildura and 16 in Irymple.
The 2022 to 2023 Murray floods
Mildura had major flooding, evacuations and inundation. The first Murray River flood warning came on 5 August 2022 and the last on 26 January 2023. River floods are a different problem from roofs, but flood-affected homes are worth a roof and ceiling check once they've dried out.
Chaffey-era and heritage homes
Mildura began as the Chaffey brothers' irrigation settlement in 1887, and early homes include Queen Anne style houses such as Rio Vista, William Chaffey's former home. A 2024 heritage study recommended protection for 86 individual places, four precincts and 12 serial listings, so check with Mildura Rural City Council before visible changes to an older house.
Merbein, Red Cliffs and Irymple
Merbein was settled from 1909 and Red Cliffs from 1923, with soldier-settlement farms taken up from 1917. Homes out there face the same heat and storms as town, and a roofer may have further to travel, so mention your locality when you get in touch.
The jobs that come up most around Mildura
Ventilation and heat. Whirlybirds and other roof vents let hot air out of the roof space, and a lighter roof stays cooler: BlueScope says light coloured roofs can be up to 35 °C cooler on the surface than dark ones in hot sun. See roof ventilation and heat-reflective roof coatings.
Recoating sun-faded roofs. Dulux says roof coatings fade partly through chalking, where UV breaks down the acrylic binder. Under this much sun, roof painting is worth budgeting for.
Storm repairs and gutters. After a supercell, it's lifted sheets, broken tiles and overflowing gutters. Keeping gutters clear before summer is the cheap insurance: gutter cleaning in Mildura explains the timing.
What we'd do in Mildura
If the house is hot in summer, we'd look at the roof space before the air conditioner: ventilation, insulation and, when it's next due for a recoat, a lighter colour. Then we'd get the gutters cleared every spring, because one summer storm into blocked gutters can do more damage than a year of sun.
