Roofers in RedcliffeBlueScope names Redcliffe. Here's why that matters.

BlueScope's salt marine bulletin uses Redcliffe as one of its examples of exposed water, and its roofing guide applies the same distance rules to exposed water as to breaking surf. So if you're re-roofing near the bay, the steel product matters as much as the colour. Tell us the job and your postcode. If there's a roofer near Redcliffe who specialises in that kind of job, we'll match you with them, and if there isn't, we'll let you know.

Redcliffe from the water's edge

Exposed bay water

BlueScope's TB-35 lists Redcliffe, Cleveland and Fisherman's Island on Moreton Bay as exposed marine examples. Its selection guide recommends standard COLORBOND more than 200 m from exposed water, COLORBOND Ultra more than 100 m, and SUPERDURA Stainless at any distance.

Wind across the bay

In the storms of 31 October 2020, wind damage ran from Redcliffe to Kingston, with gusts over 100 km/h recorded around Moreton Bay.

A seaside town since the 1880s

Redcliffe has drawn holidaymakers since the 1880s, and the Hornibrook Bridge to Brighton, finished in 1935, brought rapid suburban growth.

Units along the shore

The first high-rise went up on Marine Parade in 1974, and many more followed along the coast from the 2000s. In 2021, 37.6% of occupied homes in the suburb were flats or apartments and 51.4% were houses, with a median age of 52.

Flat ground

The peninsula is relatively flat, with few spots more than 20 m above sea level, so salt and wind rather than slope are what a roofer here plans around.

What salt air does to a roof here

Salt builds up where rain doesn't rinse: under eaves, behind flashings, along the backs of gutters and around screw heads. BlueScope wants those spots washed every three months near salt spray, twice as often as its six-monthly baseline. A garden hose from the ground does the job.

Gutters and fascias often go before the roof sheets. For eave gutters, BlueScope recommends standard COLORBOND or ZINCALUME more than 200 m from salt marine influence and COLORBOND Ultra more than 100 m, so near the water ask what the gutters are made of, not just the roof. Gutter replacement in Brisbane covers the options.

Mixing metals causes trouble too. Lead flashings and copper run-off corrode COLORBOND and ZINCALUME, so old lead around a chimney or vent should be painted or separated when the roof is redone.

Before you sign a re-roof quote in Redcliffe

  • The exact product named, such as COLORBOND Ultra or SUPERDURA Stainless, not just 'Colorbond'.
  • Your rough distance from the high water mark, which is where BlueScope measures from.
  • Gutters, flashings and fixings rated for the same exposure as the sheets.
  • The roofer's QBCC licence number, and a written contract for any job over $3,300.
  • Home warranty cover included, since most residential roof work over $3,300 needs it in Queensland.

Our take for Redcliffe

Within a few streets of the bay, we'd choose the steel by distance from the water first and colour second, and we'd want the product written on the quote. Between visits, hose the eaves and gutter backs from the ground every few months. If you're in a unit block, talk to the building manager before arranging any roof work.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is Redcliffe close enough to the bay for salt to matter?
Near the water, yes. BlueScope names Redcliffe as exposed marine water and sets a minimum distance for each steel product, measured from the high water mark. Tell the roofer roughly how far you are and ask which product suits.
Can I use ZINCALUME in Redcliffe?
Only well back from the water. BlueScope recommends ZINCALUME more than 200 m from exposed marine water, so it isn't recommended for homes close to the bay. Have the roofer confirm for your address.
Can I get a Redcliffe roofer through you?
Tell us the job and your postcode. If we have a licence-checked roofer on the peninsula, we'll pass it to them, and only them. If we don't, we'll say so.
