Campbelltown in brief
The satellite city plan
Council's 2011 heritage review says the 1961 Webb Report recommended a satellite city here, describing the site as pleasantly hilly and undulating. A 1973 State Planning Authority structure plan then guided extensive suburban development through the valley.
Colonial roots
Campbelltown was established in 1820. Some of the earliest Permanent Conservation Orders in NSW were placed on its colonial buildings, including the late Georgian Queen Street Group.
Bush on the edges
Council names Kentlyn, Wedderburn, Minto Heights, Long Point, Airds, Ingleburn, St Helens Park and Smiths Creek as the urban and bushland areas most at risk from bushfire. It manages about 740 hectares of bushland.
Public and private housing
The government set aside land around the old township for public and private housing, and public housing estates are scattered across the area. At the 2021 Census, 51.1% of homes in Campbelltown were separate houses and 34.9% were flats or apartments.
What Campbelltown roofs usually need
A proper look at an older tiled roof. Ridge mortar cracks, valleys wear and paint fades on roofs from the planned-city years. Monier lists cracked ridge bedding as a common cause of leaks, and rebedding and repointing (relaying and resealing the mortar under the ridge caps) often fixes it.
Ember protection on the bush edge. The NSW RFS says 85% of houses lost in bushfires go from ember attack, which can arrive more than 100 m ahead of the fire. It recommends non-combustible gutter and valley guards installed to AS 3959, and clearing leaves from roofs, valleys and gutters before each season. See ember guards.
Safe access on sloping blocks. On a hilly street, scaffolding or edge protection can be a real part of the price. Ask for it to be listed separately so you can compare quotes fairly.
Heritage first, roofer second. If you own a building in the Queen Street Group or another listed place, talk to council before any re-roof.
If it were our roof in Campbelltown
On a planned-era house, we'd ask a roofer to check the ridges and valleys and tell us honestly whether a restoration buys real time. In Kentlyn, Wedderburn or any street backing onto bush, we'd add ember guards and have the gutters cleared before the fire season. Pass us the job and your postcode. Where a licence-checked roofer covers Campbelltown, your contact details go to them alone, and where there's nobody, you'll know straight away.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
