Matching the steel to a Sydney address
Surf and exposed water share one rule
BlueScope's March 2023 roofing bulletin recommends standard COLORBOND in a Classic or Matt finish more than 200 m from breaking surf or exposed marine water, and COLORBOND Ultra more than 100 m away. SUPERDURA Stainless can go at any distance. So a house a block back from Bondi Beach and one on the harbour foreshore east of the Bridge face the same steel question.
Calm water is a different story
BlueScope counts protected water such as Darling Harbour and the Parramatta River as calm. Standard COLORBOND is recommended at any distance from calm water, while unpainted ZINCALUME should sit more than 100 m from it. Distances are measured from the high tide mark, and prevailing wind and spots the rain never washes still matter.
Ultra comes in fewer colours
COLORBOND Ultra is made in 7 core colours: Surfmist, Dune, Shale Grey, Windspray, Wallaby, Woodland Grey and Monument, with others possibly on request. SUPERDURA Stainless comes in 4. If your heart is set on a colour outside those, check before you fall in love with it.
Heat in the west, BASIX everywhere
Penrith reached 48.9 °C in January 2020. BlueScope says a light roof can run up to 35 °C cooler on the surface than a dark one in hot sun. NSW BASIX classes a roof colour as light below a solar absorptance of 0.475, medium from 0.475 to 0.7 and dark above 0.7.
Hail dents and ember gaps
BlueScope says hail dents don't usually shorten a COLORBOND roof's life, though big dents on a low pitch can make water pond. On bush fire prone land, COLORBOND roofing, gutters and downpipes can form part of a compliant system right up to BAL-FZ, and Lysaght suggests closing off rib cavities with infill strips to keep embers out.
Looking after steel near the water
Rain washes the roof itself, but sheltered spots don't get that rinse. BlueScope's October 2026 maintenance bulletin says unwashed areas, like the underside of gutters and cladding under the eaves, should be washed every three months in coastal areas with salt spray, instead of every six.
Ask for neutral cure sealant, the kind that doesn't smell of vinegar, because BlueScope says the other common types can corrode the coating. Keep lead flashings and copper run-off off the steel, and register your BlueScope warranty online within 12 months of installation. The warranty you get depends on your location, so check it covers your distance from the water.
What to ask a Sydney Colorbond installer
- How far is my house from breaking surf, exposed water or calm water by BlueScope's definitions, and which steel does that call for?
- What profile and base metal thickness are you quoting?
- Will the warranty cover my location, and will you help me register it?
- If I'm switching from tiles, has anyone checked whether the frame needs changes?
- Is your NSW contractor licence for roof plumbing, which covers metal roofing?
What we'd do
We'd measure the distance to the nearest surf, exposed water or calm water before choosing a colour, then pick from whatever range that distance allows. Out west we'd lean to a lighter colour for the heat. And we'd get the exact product name, grade and thickness on the quote, because 'Colorbond' alone doesn't tell you which steel you're getting. The national Colorbond roofing page covers profiles and the job itself, and the Sydney hub covers local conditions.
