What wears out Gold Coast gutters
Falling limbs and wind
The Christmas 2023 storms and Alfred's 100 km/h-plus gusts in March 2025 brought down branches and whole pine trees, including at Kirra. Gutters take the hit from falling limbs, and blocked downpipes after a storm leave them full, heavy and sagging.
A lot of water in a hurry
With February averaging 183.4 mm at the Seaway, Gold Coast gutters have to shift a lot of water fast. A run that's lost its fall, or has too few downpipes, spills over the front, or back toward the fascia and eaves.
Salt from below
BlueScope recommends ZINCALUME or standard COLORBOND gutters more than 200 m from salt marine influence, and COLORBOND Ultra from 100 m. Its guidance talks about salt marine influence generally, so it's worth asking about canal and estuary frontages as well as the beach.
Choosing new gutters
Most homes get a quad profile, the classic boxy shape. Lysaght says a half round gutter's curved base helps it self-clean and carry a lot of water, which can suit leafy blocks, and an ogee profile suits some heritage homes. See gutter profiles.
Match the gutter to the roof. BlueScope says galvanised gutters can corrode early under a COLORBOND or ZINCALUME roof, so it recommends COLORBOND or ZINCALUME gutters instead, joined with sealed aluminium rivets and neutral cure sealant.
Old gutters on homes built before 1990 may be asbestos cement, which ASSEA lists among asbestos roofing products. Don't cut or break them; have them checked first.
Licences and warranty
The QBCC's metal fascias and gutters licence covers making and installing gutters, fascias and external flashings, and the plumbing and drainage licence covers gutters too. If the job is over $3,300, it must carry Queensland home warranty cover, which specifically includes gutter and downpipe work.
Questions to ask before you replace
- Which profile and size do you recommend for my roof area?
- Is the steel grade right for my distance from salt water?
- How many downpipes will there be, and where?
- Will the new gutters have an overflow, such as slotted fronts?
- Are you checking the fascia boards behind the old gutters?
- Which QBCC licence do you hold?
What you can check yourself
You can
- Look along the gutter line from the ground for sags and rust streaks
- Watch where water spills in a heavy storm
- Keep ground-level drains and downpipe outlets clear
Leave to a roofer
- Removing and fitting gutters at height
- Fascia repairs
- Old gutters that might be asbestos cement
If it were our house
If more than a couple of sections were rusting through, we'd replace the whole run rather than patch, so the steel and the fall are consistent. Near the water, we'd ask for the grade BlueScope recommends for our distance, by name. And we'd get it done before December, ahead of the wettest stretch. Our national gutter replacement page and the Gold Coast hub have more.
