Roofing in Palm BeachMeasure from the waves, then choose the steel.

Palm Beach is a strip of surf beach between Tallebudgera and Currumbin creeks, held in place by seawalls, training walls and regular sand top-ups. BlueScope lists Gold Coast beaches as surf, so how far your roof sits from the breaking waves decides which steel will last. Close to 40% of homes here are flats, where roof work goes through the body corporate.

Palm Beach's coast

Between two creeks

Tallebudgera Creek bounds the suburb to the north and Currumbin Creek to the south, with the Coral Sea on one side and the Pacific Motorway on the other.

An engineered shoreline

A training wall went in at the Tallebudgera entrance between 1976 and 1981, a seawall near Currumbin Rock in 1973 and 1978, and a rock wall on the Palm Beach side in 1981. Sand dredged from Currumbin Creek tops up the southern beach, and the 2019 Palm Beach Shoreline Project added an artificial reef.

Wind off the sea

During ex-Cyclone Alfred, Coolangatta and Gold Coast Airport both recorded 100 km/h gusts on 7 March 2025. Palm Beach was also on the disaster assistance list after the Christmas 2023 storms.

Units and holiday lets

At the 2021 Census, 38.4% of homes were flats, 19.8% townhouses or similar and 40.9% separate houses. 37.0% were rented and 14.7% of dwellings were empty on census night.

Reading that table for your house

BlueScope measures from the high water mark, and its guidance applies to salt only. Wind direction, shelter and parts of the house that rain never washes all change how fast steel corrodes, so treat the table as the starting point.

If you're on a canal rather than the beach, BlueScope classes Gold Coast canal estates as calm water, where standard COLORBOND is recommended at any distance. Ask the roofer to write the category and product on the quote.

Whatever you have, hose the sheltered spots every few months: BlueScope's October 2026 bulletin says three-monthly in coastal areas with salt spray. Rusting screws and gutter joints are roof plumbing on the Gold Coast work.

What we'd do in Palm Beach

Within a couple of hundred metres of the beach, we'd pay for Ultra or stainless rather than risk early corrosion. In a unit, we'd report problems to the body corporate in writing and let them organise the roofer. For a house, give us the job and your street, and we'll pass it to one licence-checked roofer covering Palm Beach if we have one, or tell you straight up that we don't.

Questions

Straight answers.

How do I work out my distance from the surf?
BlueScope measures from the high water mark, not the edge of the dunes or the road. A rough measure on an online map is a start, but ask your roofer to confirm it and put the marine category on the quote.
Is Ultra or stainless worth the extra money?
Close to the surf, usually. BlueScope only recommends standard COLORBOND more than 200 m from breaking surf, so using it closer in risks early corrosion. Ask for prices on both and how long each is expected to last at your address.
