What makes Greensborough roofs harder work
Hills and the river valley
The land around Greensborough is hilly, and the town sits on the Plenty River with reserves along the valley. On a sloping block, the back of the house can be a long way off the ground, so ask how the roofer plans to get safe access.
Bush on the doorstep
The Green Wedge bushland runs north into Eltham and Diamond Creek, and Andrew Yandell Reserve alone has over six hectares of indigenous bush. Monier recommends cleaning gutters, downpipes and valleys at least once a year, and more often under trees.
Tree rules in Banyule
Banyule City Council says all its residential areas have tree protection overlays. Removing or lopping a tree may need a permit depending on its size and species, and so can heavy pruning of a protected tree.
Two councils, one suburb
Greensborough is split between Banyule and Nillumbik. Nillumbik says bushfire is a serious risk in the shire, so on that side clear gutters are a fire precaution as well as a drainage one.
Postwar to 1980s houses
Greensborough stayed mostly rural until after the war. Steady growth began in the 1960s, and newer 1980s streets sit east of the bypass across the Plenty River. 38.0% of homes were owned outright in 2021.
The jobs that come up in Greensborough
Gutter cleaning and guards. Leaf litter never really stops here. See gutter cleaning in Melbourne and gutter guards in Melbourne.
Leaks from packed valleys. When leaves fill a valley, water backs up and runs under the tiles. See roof leak repair in Melbourne.
Moss and lichen on shaded faces. Roofs under trees stay damp longer. See moss removal.
Storm damage from branches. The 6 March 2010 storm reached Greensborough at 3:00 pm. If a branch is resting on the roof, leave it for the roofer or an arborist.
Your part, and what to hand over
You can
- Check with Banyule or Nillumbik before pruning or removing a tree near the roof
- Clear low gutters you can reach safely from a ladder on level ground
- After a storm, look for fallen branches from the ground, never from the roof
Leave to a roofer
- Gutters on the high side of a sloping block
- Clearing valleys and fitting guards
- Any branch resting on or through the roof
If it were our Greensborough roof
If big trees hang over the house, we'd have gutters and valleys cleared in late autumn and again in late spring. We'd ask the council before cutting anything back, then get one roofer to clear, check and fit guards in a single visit, which saves paying for access twice.
